Age Recommendation:

Abangabonwa means ‘the unseen’ in isiZulu. This piece draws on the ‘unheard’ stories of people living in the townships in poverty (mother daughter love, struggles with drugs, living in two worlds – work and home. It draws on the experiences of the choreographer and the dancers – experiences in which they felt ‘unheard and unseen’.

Abangabonwa received a Standard Bank Ovation Merit Award at the 2016 National Arts Festival in Grahamstown and was well received by the arts industry.

  • Gregory Vuyani Maqoma said: “Certainly my highlight so far of the National Arts Festival Fringe Dance Programme. Thank you Mzokuthula Gasa and Sibonelo Dance Project for giving me hope for the future of contemporary African dance.”
  • Mandla Mbothwe stated, “Last night I witnessed an extraordinary work of art, a sincere physical dance storytelling of note… I was deeply moved and taken on a journey of past, present and future. Thanks Sibonelo Dance Company and Mzo Gasa.”
